PHP Web Hosting

Created in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf, PHP was originally a software library in PERL (another programming language, created in 1987 by Larry Wall) to keep a record of visitors who viewed his CV online. But, while continuing to add functionality, the creator of the future PHP has finally transformed its library into an implementation in C language, can communicate with its databases and create dynamic and simple applications for the Web.

Faced with his changes, Rasmus Lerdorf decided to publish his code in 1995, under the name PHP / FI, or “Personal Home Page Tools / Form Interpreter”. Two years later, two students – Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski, are redeveloping the code that leads to the third version of PHP, which has become Hypertext Preprocessor. They continue their work and rewrite the internal engine – Zend Engine – at the base of PHP version 4.

In 2002, this language has spread widely to be used by more than 8 million sites worldwide, according to a study conducted and available at http://www.php.net/usage.php. In 2007, it is already 20 million … The rapid increase in its use is in total contradiction with the number of security flaws that also increase during these 5 years: vulnerabilities related to PHP applications, due to bad programming habits and dubious small commands of the language.

Nowadays it is almost essential to realize a dynamic website, PHP hosting offers are not lacking, most hosts offering this option. However, beware of the version offered (version 5.3 was released in June 2009, and version 5.4 should be available shortly), and possibly the number and size of MySQL databases available. Also, beware, some scripts are not compatible with the latest versions of PHP. Contact the hosts and / or developers of the scripts you want to use before you commit.
